H1N1/Swine Flu Alive and Well in Trinidad
The first Swine Flu/H1N1 case was confirmed in Trinidad on the 5th of June. Since then we’ve
heard talks about pandemic preparedness, medical procedures, isolation arrangements, some random idiot doctor in Tobago saying on the news that they have a “cure” for the Swine Flu, Tamiflu, etc.
It was inevitable that the virus would come to Trinidad, it has already spread to New York City, and we all know how many Trinis are back and worth between NYC and Trinidad.
Since then however, developments are suggestive that the virus is spreading rampantly :
Jamaica and Trinidad on swine flu alert
Two new Swine Flu cases in Tobago
2 Swine Flu cases suspected in South Trinidad
I really cringe at how this is being handled by the authorities. I have absolutely no faith in these cover-your-ass press briefings by the Ministry of Health :
It would be nice to see these so-called measures being actually implemented though :
• Additional supplies of Tamiflu, 450 protective equipment kits received.
• $440,000 from PAHO to assist ministry responses.
• Model guidelines sent to the Labour Ministry on policies for treating the virus in the workplace.
• Reintegration guidelines to prevent stigma of flu victims who return to work.
• WHO recommends countries should not close borders/restrict international traffic/trade.
But at the end of the day all you can really do is hope for the best.
