Improving Skills in DotA

adot

This is an interesting post here at http://thedotatimes.blogspot.com about a theory in DotA regarding players improving their skills : “Linear Skill Growth vs Exponential Skill Growth”.

“…So why then, are there some players who are better than others who may have started out before them? It depends on the individual, but there are ways for everyone to get better.

I’d like to explain this with a simple theory which occurred to me because of my busy life: Linear Growth vs. Exponential growth.

An example of the first: Mr. A plays 9 hours of DotA a day on Garena. He doesn’t really care about who he’s playing against, and just wants to play for the sake of it. He’s been doing this for a year now, and still he isn’t that spectacular. He doesn’t read about DotA, and his strategy is based purely on in-game experience. At the rate he’s going, one can expect him to stay the same after a year.”

While I agree with what he’s saying, I don’t take his stance on Exponential Skill Growth being this fantastic achievement.

DotA is a game. I play it when I’m bored or to relax, I’m just not going to obsessively study replays from tournaments and analyze shit, this would then make DotA more of, you guessed it, a JOB, and even worse, a job you’re not getting paid for. I pretty much have enough common sense to improve along the way just playing with good players, and I believe there are other more important things in life to consciously attempt to improve yourself at. Sure I can be a better hopscotch player if I studied videos of the best hopscotch players in the world, but at the end of the day, its fucking hopscotch.

Ask yourself this. If you enjoy something, should you really work hard at enjoying it? No, because it just wouldn’t be as enjoyable anymore,  unless that comes to you naturally to really want to improve yourself, at least that’s my opinion..
