The Truth Shall Set Us Free

Life and Relationships

A friend of mine got his heart broken over the weekend as his girlfriend of almost 3 years broke up with him. According to him she cited “falling out of love” as the reason.

This brings into question what love really is. Traditionally and in the simplest way
that I can think up at the moment, its the feeling you get for someone beyond just
liking them, to the point where you can’t get sick of them, thus you’d want to
spend an indefinite period of time with them, eventually leading to marriage. It
involves loving the person inspite of their faults, even beginning to adore their
faults, where possible, as you’re just so much into the person.

I know for a fact that this is something which existed or even still exists for this
guy and well, his ex-girlfriend now. Since I’ve known them at university they
practically spent every second with each other outside of class effortlessly and in a
way many couples would envy. They’re no high school crushes but a really solid
couple in my opinion from what I’ve seen. How then could something like this happen?

I believe in the falling out of love theory, but not for this couple. I believe falling out
of love happens when shit like this happens :

Affective Disorder and Personality Change in a Patient With Traumatic Brain Injury

When someone dramatically changes into a different (for the worst for one partner)
person. In that case its entirely understandable.

The only change which seemingly dramatically changed for the couple was their
situation : they obviously don’t spend as much time together now as they’ve
graduated and all. Usually, couples work through challenges like that, because in
the end love conquers all….right?

For normal people in normal situations, its nonsense to say really that you’ve fallen
out of love with someone, it either means you weren’t in love with the person to
begin with (not present there I believe) or you are frustrated with certain
uncontrollable factors which are in some way negatively affecting your love for the
person, and you haven’t realized it.

Of course there are assholes on the Internet propagating the fall out of love thing
as something as natural as wanting to kiss someone, but there are also people who
don’t believe there is a God neither.

I can only hope everything works out for the best for the two of them. Seeing
couples like them breakup makes me lose optimism in life.
