Summit Aftershocks
The TNT Mirror (Sharmain Baboolal) has reported that 300 security cameras that were installed from the Piarco International Airport to as far as West mall have been abandoned and are not in use after Israeli Security Consultants, the MER Group, left Trinidad after the conclusion of the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
That’s stupid on its own, but what about the cost implications? I suggest you take a seat before reading this.
The security camera system required a fibre optic line. The cost of laying A MILE of fibre optic cable is close to US$100,000. This line was reportedly laid from Piarco to West Mall.
I tried to average it on Google Maps, and my figure is 15 miles, so that’s US$1.5 MILLION of fibre optic lines alone.
Add to that the cost of the Internet Protocol (IP) cameras and other components of the surveillance system which are reportedly costing Trinidad well over TT$500 MILLION
Add to that the fact that that is actually a sunken cost, which will definitely not directly benefit Trinidad at all as it was LEASED EQUIPMENT which will be returned to the MER Group in 6 months!
Add to that the fact that no local has been trained to operate the surveillance system, so it is literally over TT$1 billion just lying there.
Without doing any more calculations, these facts basically spell out that Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Trade Minister Mariano Browne who both denied the entire cost of the Summit reached TT$1 billion and said that its around TT$600 million are fucking lying.
It seems as if the total, final figure may even cross my estimated figure of TT$2 billion and may even almost hit TT$3 billion.
So yes, revel in your stupidity, you, the customs official who fainted when Obama landed in Piarco, and the resident on TV who burst into tears at the thought of not being able to see Obama when he arrives in Trinidad, and every single one of you “OMG the summit was such a success, I love Obama” intellectual degenerates, while $2 billion of your own money goes down the drain…….but hey wasn’t that cultural show fantastic or what?
