Bar Serving Alcohol in UWI
Recently the NGO Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) issued a morally suasive statement for UWI to close the bar operating on campus. There is in fact a bar on the UWI Main campus that is open about 8 hours everyday except for Sunday and serves alcohol to UWI students and anyone else who looks like one.
While selfishly I think the CBTT should shut up and let us drink and be merry, they do in fact raise a good point. What would UWI do if some noob fresher dies from alcohol poisoning right there on campus after drinking at that bar? They may not be legally liable, but it certainly isn’t good PR. The bar should be closed, and there should be a zone established around the University where bars cannot operate, i.e. IF we are serious about this.
It is totally inappropriate for a university to go laissez-faire and have a bar operating on campus serving alcohol. How can do that and at the same time host workshops and seminars and appear on television programs where they condescendingly lecture about what’s good for the society?
Good job CBTT, now only if UWI took you seriously.
