Some of the Summit, If Only

If only Trinidad could benefit from  some of the organization practices for the preparation of the Summit of the Americas.

Already I’ve heard about these different colored security zones, I took me back to 2004-2005 when we heard about the “green zones” in Baghdad, which is basically - everyone is barred from Port-of-Spain on days of the summit.

We’ve been through the traffic “dry-runs” for the summit which is basically frustrate all motorists as much as possible.

And to my surprise I dialed a wrong number today to be taken to a Summit fucking “support line” :  800-8788

Today I’ve heard yet another inflammatory utterance escape the arrogant mouth of Minister Mariano Browne. He says that private hospitals will be on standby on the day of the summit in case their services are needed. Before that he said residents of Port-of-Spain should stock up on food before the day of the summit, hinting basically there will be an effective curfew for all residents in their own city.

There is no green zone for all citizens of Trinidad as crime has taken over the country. Claudia Feldmeier’s killer is yet to be found, Leah Lammy, a child kidnapped in broad daylight is yet to be found, and 99% of all state witnesses are murdered under police protection.

There was no dry-run for the “blimp”, a so-called crime fighting tool which circles the skies of T&T everyday, wasting money and doing jack-shit.

There is no support line for complaints about the public health service, as every month or so you hear about people being operated on for unknown reasons, medical malpractice, doctors not knowing how to read CT-scans, misdiagnoses, all resulting in random deaths of citizens with no compensation.

And finally, the mere statement that PRIVATE hospitals will be put on standby means that the public hospitals are in a mess. It would make my year if  foreign officials had to visit the Port-of-Spain or  San Fernando General Hospitals for them to witness its deplorable conditions.

So if only some of the hassle around the summit could have been applied to everyday life, what a difference it would make to a much larger contingent of people.
