#6 Showcasing Their Occupations
I was at TGIF one night, I saw a young lady, I knew she was either an engineer or plant technician, because she was sitting in TGIF in the flame-retardant coveralls (shown above) which both jobs require. Note, these are coveralls, you can take them off after work, why would anyone go for dinner in company coveralls other than to show off that you work in the energy industry?
I was at the Valsayn food court one day for lunch. ThereĀ I saw a young man about 5 years older than me, I knew he was a doctor. Not from knowing him personally, or recognizing him at the medical center earlier (which I did) or his name tag, or seeing his job letter fall out somewhere, its because he had a stethoscope around his neck, walking all over the mall obviously to showcase to all patrons that he is in fact, a doctor.
Trinis love showcasing that they have “prestigious” occupations. It starts from young. You’ll never see a student from Marabella Junior Secondary (one of the “problem” schools”) prance around in the mall after school in their uniforms, but you’ll surely see Jack and Jill’s daughter who is a student of Naparima Girls High School (you need atleast a 95% score in the Secondary Entrance Assessment exam to get into this school) fully clad in her uniform at 6:00 pm all over the place, because Jack and Jill wants you to know she is in fact a student at this school.
And of course as we grow up the stupidity continues. Do doctors even use stethoscopes at hospitals to do jack-shit anymore? Don’t EKGs do that better now? So then why literally wear them as an accessory outside of the workplace?
Same goes for those coveralls. Don’t they feel warm in those? The temperature in Trinidad averages like 30C/90F everyday. Why wear coveralls in that? Are we really that hungry for self-esteem?

I totally agree with you.In our socitey, your occupation is what defines you as opposed to anything else. Its very primitive to say the least.
