UWI’s New ID Card Policy
So I went up to UWI today on business, only to be literally blocked by a security guard at the gate, asking for my ID. Strange. I don’t have an ID, I graduated, my alumni card will have to do, she then asked for my NATIONAL ID for whatever reason, bs-ed for a few seconds then let me through. Its cool that they are trying a new security initiative, and its good that it will weed out the hundreds of posers who lurk around campus when they know they’re not students, but that’s a little bit of overkill.
UWI is funded by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, hence, taxpayer money runs UWI, hence, you cannot bar members of the public from entering UWI. I atleast believe this should be the case. I’m not saying let all and sundry run amok on campus, you won’t want a bunch of people in the Library, class rooms, etc. but the ID check at the gate thing is bullshit.
I should not be surprised, its the typical Trini response to something. Crime is high in Chaguanas, so lets deploy soldiers and police officers armed with machine guns to patrol the streets. Crime is high in UWI, so lets do shit like makeup this ridiculous new policy.
