Trinis like Machel. Our very own Michael Jackson, singing since he was a child……and at the same time our very own Kanye West, with the ego of 5 narcissists.
Montano has been recently slapped with 5 charges recently relating to his allegedly thuggish behaviour at the Zen nightclub, Port of Spain. According to eyewitnesses he slapped, verbally abused and assaulted a patron at the club because of a spilt drink.
About nine years ago, he held another one of his gimmickly grandiose concerts called “Real Unity”. Cheap seating arrangements resulted in the collapse of an entire seating stand – mass injuries, thankfully no deaths. The show went on, while just under a hundred people or so had to be whisked off to the hospital. Machel “took repsonsibility” and said the cause of the collapse was to show the government that a performing arts centre was needed.
Since then he always organizes these foolish concerts or themes for himself every year. Machel and his band were once the “Road Marching Band” a concept taken from the movie Drumline, “The Circus”, and now he’s…”HD”.
Despite the superficiality of his music and gimmicky concerts Montano is revered as the King of Soca and no doubt one of the most popular Caribbean entertainers. He worked with a number of international and Caribbean artistes including Beenie Man, Shaggy. Vybz Kartel, Lil Jon, Pitbull, Doug E. Fresh, Wyclef Jean, just to name a few.
